Bridging the Gap: How "Reclaiming Narrative on Health Education" Created a Direct Pathway to NHS Care

Reclaiming Health Education_Speakers on Stage

In October 2024, Absolute Diversity hosted the "Reclaiming Narrative on Health Education" conference at The Globe in Reading. This event was designed as a proactive intervention to bridge the gap in health education for Black communities, moving beyond standard engagement to deliver a culturally relevant experience for over 200 attendees.
1. Representation and Expert-Led Education
The conference addressed systemic barriers by providing information specifically tailored to the unique health needs of Black populations.

Expert Guidance: Leading medical figures like Dr. MaryAnn Ferreux and Dr. Nneka Nwokolo provided authoritative insights on topics often overlooked in mainstream healthcare, such as the nuances of menopause and diabetes.

Inclusive Research: A forward-looking theme focused on increasing participation in clinical trials, ensuring that future healthcare products better reflect diverse communities.

2. A "Community Wellness" Approach to Health
By blending clinical expertise with a welcoming atmosphere, the event removed traditional barriers to healthcare access:

Direct Clinical Impact: In partnership with the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, we provided free on-site testing for cholesterol, diabetes, and blood pressure.

Measurable Results: This diagnostic bridge identified 2.5% of participants who required immediate clinical follow-up, successfully funneling them into NHS health pathways.
3. Impact and Long-Term Legacy
The most significant outcome of the 2024 conference was its evolution from a single day of action into a sustained clinical presence.

Formal Partnerships:The success of the event catalysed an ongoing -term partnership with the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Continued Access:This collaboration led to two additional high-impact health clinics at The Globe in 2025, maintaining community trust through consistent, localised access.

By equipping individuals with the tools to advocate for their own health,"Reclaiming Narrative on Health Education"has transitioned from a successful event into a practical model for community health equity.
